Los Gallos de Attica : ska from the Black Sea !

Posted by easternxpress on May 19, 2009

LosGallos– ska from the Black Sea –

Los Gallos de Attica is a Stockholm-based band that came to life in 2005. Some of us were working at the same factory when it closed down and we decided to go to Cuba for a long vacation. We stayed mostly in the cities of Havana and Cienfuegos where we learned a little Spanish, practiced the traditional music instruments, hanged around with local bands and got to know many talented musicians. Back in Skandinavia we got several friends involved and started to rehearse. Many of us are big fans of Jamaican music, so we decided to play ska and reggae with Spanish lyrics and some punk attitude. In mars 2006 we performed a song on student radio and later that year we got our first gig at Musslan Bar. Usually it’s a quite, little place for only fifty persons, but that night it was about 100 people there, packed like sardines in a tin. Since then we have played at many local clubs and bars, private parties and schools. Once we even played at the bikers club. In the end of 2008 the band recorded six new tracks at studio Dubious. This time we have added Eastern European beat to a couple of songs, a few elements from Klezmer music and a little Balkan unza unza.”

“Ska from Black sea” helt enkelt.

Lineup:

Andrei – trumpet, vocals
Dr. Ego – vocals
Iván – guitar
Joel – guitar
Lars – bass
Lowe – sax, clarinet
Marcus – drums

22/5, 9pm : Los Gallos de Attica @ Hijazz, Uppsala. 60kr

The Art of Violence

(The Mark of Caïn) av Alix Lambert (Ryssland/USA, 2000)

Rysk dialog, svensk undertext.

the-mark-of-cainSailing ships, stars, angels and executioners – The Mark of Cain chronicles the vanishing practice and language of Russian Criminal Tattoos. Captured in some of Russia’s most notorious prisons, including the fabled White Swan, the film traces the animus of the flowers of this carnal art by way of the brutality of it’s origins- the penitentiary and the criminal environment. Incisive interviews with prisoners, guards, and criminologists reveal the secret language of The Zone and The Code of Thieves of the vory v zakone. As early as the 1920’s, Russian prisons and Gulag began to attract the attention of researchers. The prisoners of the Stalinist Gulag, or “Zone,” as it is called, developed a complex social structure that incorporated highly symbolic tattooing as a mark of rank. The very existence of these inmates at prisons and forced labor camps was treated by the state as a deep secret, and their tattoo art was considered a forbidden topic. In the last decade, Russia’s prison population has exploded; overcrowding has reached unimaginable proportions. Few other nations have had such a massive prison population. The most conservative estimates suggest that in the last decades, over thirty million of Russia’s inmates have had tattoos even though the process is against the law inside prison. According to The Book of Genesis, God placed a mark on the world’s first murderer before sending him into exile. The mark of Cain proclaimed its bearer as a criminal and social outcast; for centuries, prisoners and those who broke social codes were forcibly tattooed. In Russian prisons, tattooing emerged as a visual mode of communication linked with social division. The Mark of Cain tells the story of a fading art form and how that practice’s death reflects transition in broader Russian society.

Tommy the Gun and his Circus Bizarre Orchestra

Posted by easternxpress on January 13, 2009

tommy-the-gun23/1, 10pm : Tommy the Gun & His Circus bizarre @ Hijazz, Uppsala.

24/1, 10pm : Tommy the Gun & His Circus bizarre @ klubb Kalashnikov, KGB bar, Stockholm.

Tommy the Gun & His Circus bizarre Orchestra are as they sound… bizarre!

“THE BAND’S MUSIC is an evil mixture of punk and ska-music, with a inclination towards eastern-Europe folk music. It’s driven by a pumping beat with mesmerizing melodies. In short it’s music to put you into ecstasy! Yet no recording has satisfying capture the essence of TGCBO, it’s an orchestra to experience live, in awe and horror!

THE EVIL QUINTET has its origin in the dark Hellsingland, where the devil has lurked in the shadows since man first settled there; seducing the most innocent with his violin. It is in this that Tommy the Gun and his Circus Bizzarre Orchestra has its heritage. Maybe we don’t seduce the innocent. But al least we stir things up with a spoonful of madness.”

Join the party for 2 days in a row in Uppsala and Stockholm !

How could you resist ?

Radio Kairo @ Hijazz, 14/11

Posted by easternxpress on October 29, 2008

Radio Kairo playing in Hijazz, Uppsala, on november 14th
